Heartland Cultures

Heartland Cultures

Three Cultures make up the Heartland Cultures. Linguistically and phenotypically, they are very similar. What sets them apart are their values and world beliefs shaped by their histories.

Honkyo-Ni

The Honkyo people are the most well-educated, for schooling was encouraged for thousands of years to the modern day. Honkyo, being at the center of Nyappon, has historically received a large number of travellers from the other provinces. The Mokuren Empress has also always protected the people of Honkyo the best she could, and Honkyo city has never been breached. As a result, many of the Honkyo people are the least discriminatory towards other Nyappon cultures, though this trust does not extend to outside of Nyappon.

Thousands of years of prosperity and protection under the Mokuren empresses, the people of Honkyo are the most accepting of outsiders, but they have to be Nyapponese.

The majority of the population is concentrated in cities.

Chushinbu-Ni

The Chushinbu people are infamously racist due to their ancient history. In ancient times, the two largest kingdoms, the Honkyo Kingdom and Minato Maritime Kingdom were often at war. Chushinbu unfortunately was directly between both of them and was also unfortunate enough to be fertile farmland. In ancient Honkyo-Minato wars, both sides often pillaged Chushinbu for all her resources to sustain their campaigns. Chushinbu city was sacked 48 times in its history.

Thousands of years of death and suffering at the hands of Honkyo and Minato led to a hardened, humorless population who did not trust outsiders.

About half of the population are rural farmers who live in villages and towns around Chushinbu city in the South Honkyo Canton. The other half live within Chushinbu city.

Few respect Chushinbu, but the Shisei-Yen people do.

Honmachi-Ni

The Honmachi people are fairly open to other cultures, but if anything, they do it for the money. After all, if nobody will take your money, the Honmachi merchants will. Their travelling merchants allowed artisan goods from all over Nyappon to travel to other city-states, despite these states being at war. This netted them a healthy profit as well as protection from the war due to private armies and business connections protecting them, though they still get the odd Minato pirate or Shisei raiding party.

Thousands of years of war profiteering has made Honmachi wealthy and spared the effects of war. They are also moderately open to outsiders as a result.

The majority of Honmachi lives within cities, with there being many smaller settlements and towns. They go where the money flows.
