OSI Layers

Open Systems Interconnection model

It was introduced to standardize network communication for computers with different architectures.

Each layer is a package of protocols on top of which the devices or software is developed. For example, application layer doesn't mean the applications themselves (like chrome and firefox). It refers to the protocols and standards for that layer - to which these applications need to adhere.

  1. Physical layer : Actual physical connection - Hub, repeater, modem and cables
  2. Data link layer
  3. Network layer: Routers
  4. Transport layer: manages traffic, order of packets TCP< UDP ,
  5. Session layer: manages session
  6. Presentation layer: translates data formats and languages - data compression, encryption
  7. Application layer
